Bardeen Quad
The engineering quadrangle, stretching from Engineering Hall to the Grainger Engineering Library, was dedicated at 10AM on October 14, 2004 [1] in honor of John Bardeen, the only person to win the Nobel Prize twice in the same field, physics. [2] The landscaping and concrete terrace on the north side of Engineering Hall were funded by the Grainger Foundation as part of the dedication. [3]
The large sculpture which sits at the northeast corner of the Bardeen Quad is the 1986 Mananaan, by the Russian sculptor Alexander Liberman. It is named after the God of the Sea from James Joyce's Ulysses. The University purchased it in 1994 through private donations. [4]
